Independent on the Treasures Programme: "Superficial"

.
I am glad to see that I am not the only one feeling the Portable Antiquities' Scheme TV spectacular lacked substance. Arifa Akbar deputy literary editor and arts writer at The Independent seems to have regarded it as a bit of a waste of time (Arifa Akbar, 'Last night's viewing - Usain Bolt: the Fastest Man Alive, BBC1; Britain's Secret Treasures, ITV1' Independent 17th July 2012):
Britain's Secret Treasures was essentially an archaeology programme dressed up in a Top 50 countdown format. Michael Buerk and Bettany Hughes presented, him sombre, her smiley, while John McCarthy talked us through the discovery of a slave shackle and Saul David waxed lyrical about an ancient toy canon, but the format gave the programme a superficiality and "amazing finds" were discussed too briefly and in sound bites.
But she liked the World War I medal story.

Meanwhile it seems 3.9 million people watched the first episode, but 200 000 of them turned to another channel before the programme had finished.
